Hills Road - the background
Six members of WRiTEON! were thrilled when Cambridge community internet radio station 209radio commissioned them to produce a Cambridge-based comedy drama. This is Cambridge’s soap, written about the city, by people who live in the city. The series is called ‘Hills Road’ as this is where a lot of the action is set, but storylines also take place in other focal points of Cambridge, such as The Guildhall, Parker’s Piece and Mill Road.
The main character is Anna, who dreams of becoming a fashion designer – or of winning X-Factor, whichever comes first. She has two children, precocious pre-schooler Amy and fluffy-headed teenager Martin, and has just hired a new nanny from Romania, Magda, who very quickly establishes just who is boss in the household. She also has a dotty pal, Julia, a piano teacher and a man-eater (after a gin – or two). Anna’s retired neighbour, Gladys, also has plenty of creative ideas to fill her time, but most involve annoying her neighbours or flirting with Anna’s long-suffering, work-stressed husband Terence. Meanwhile, Gladys’ daughter Sandra, has her hands full with her own two teenage children, her taxi business – and a particularly smelly driver and his dog – as well as a Catherine Tate-esque new employee, Josie. When the X Factor auditions come to town, everyone is aiming for stardom… Will Anna be able to put Cambridge on the Fashion Radar? Will Magda survive her new life in the crazy Singleton household? Will Martin make it as an actor? You’ll find out when you tune in to ‘Hills Road’…
‘We really hope you will enjoy the stories – we’ve tried to include something that everyone will recognise about Cambridge life,’ say Alan Morgan and Michelle Golder, co-producers, directors and members of the writing team. The other ‘Hills Road’ writing team are Claire Powell, John Parry, Paul Dance and Paul Richards. After several meetings huddled in a Cambridge café, spurred on by funny hats, red wine and spicy chips, the team has written ten episodes so far. The writing was divided up so that each writer wrote one complete episode and then most of the team co-wrote one of the later episodes. Alan Morgan and Michelle Golder then edited the scripts and Alan then later edited the recorded scripts to fit the radio slot available.
All the parts are played by a team of dedicated local actors, Annette Farrant, Juliette Burton, Pam Jenner, John Parry, Holly Spice, Stefan Haselwimmer, Kimberley Holland, Joe Oxley, Jared Roussow, Magda Zydron, Paul Dance, Claire Powell, Cyrus Pundole, Francesca Brown and Jessica Moore and the series is produced by Alan Morgan, Axel Minnit and Karl Hartland.
