Zoomologues 6 – Zoom Not Zoom (monologues & duologues)
Submissions deadline – Sunday 28th March 2021 (midnight) –
Online Performances – Tuesday 27th & Thursday 29th April 2021 (two different programmes)
For the sixth round of Zoomologues (short plays to be performed live on Zoom), the theme is Zoom Not Zoom. This time, we are looking for plays that are written to be performed live on Zoom and yet are not set on Zoom. So, we are asking you to think outside the box but then place the action firmly inside the box on the screen (or two little boxes, side by side). This might or might not involve requesting the use of costume/props/set (which should be feasible for our actor/s to source easily) or suggesting the use of virtual filters or backgrounds.
So, forget all those cosy Zoom chats and awkward Zoom meetings and start thinking of Zoom, not as your setting but as your stage. Take full advantage of the way Zoom allows us to see subtle changes in expression, and the choice to either contextualise the location visually or focus only on the actor’s face (and perhaps not even reveal their location until the end).
We are not looking for scripts written for theatre, radio or film but for plays specifically designed to provide the new, unique live theatrical experience afforded by Zoom. You might have something you can adapt but do think through thoroughly how you can redraft it, to make it work in this medium. Don’t just bung it in and leave us to work it out! Trying to convince the audience that two characters are side by side on a park bench or in a room together rarely works. You need to be more imaginative. Either find an original setting or settings that is/are more credible on a screen than on a stage or find a clever way to convince us that your characters are actually both in a particular location.
You need to be/become a WRiTEON member to submit for Zoomologues 6 (for a collaboration, only one of the writers needs to be a member). 2020 membership expired on 31st December and our new More for Less Membership Scheme was launched on 1st January 2021. The annual fee has been reduced (from £20) to £12 (or £10 if you commit to renewing annually) which includes the option to attend two workshops on Zoom at no extra cost and an invitation to join our Members-Only Facebook group, as well as other submission opportunities and workshop discounts. See our Membership page for details.
Please ensure that you include the Submission Form below at the front of your script:
The Story so Far
WRiTEON’s response to the lockdown was to create Zoomologues. Between May 2020 and January 2021, 37 monologues and 23 duologues, by 26 writers, were performed by 44 actors, over ten nights, to an invited audience on live Zoom video calls. There were the inevitable lockdown stories; exploring how friendships, couple and family relationships might be forged, revived or broken, during these strange times, but there were also many other sorts of stories, ranging from Greek mythological sports commentators to a futuristic AI Priest and a homicidal clown, while our Zoomologues Gallery (Round 3) inspired wide-ranging interpretations of subjects of portrait paintings. Most of the writers and actors were local but others joined us from London, Edinburgh, Belgium and The U.S.A. Comments included:
‘I think I may prefer zoom to the experience of being in a theatre!’
‘A real treat! I enjoyed it so much. Thanks to all writers and actors – and let’s do it again soon.’
‘Another set of awesome evenings…I do hope you do more, they work really well and I’m loving some of the new voices we’re hearing…And of course the acting is top notch as well’
