Zoomologues 5 – World of Zoom (monologues & duologues)
Submissions deadline – Sunday 3rd January 2021 (midnight)
Online Performances – Tuesday 26th & Thursday 28th January 2021
For the fifth round of Zoomologues (short plays to be performed live on Zoom), the theme is World of Zoom, by which we mean the new normal, in which we gradually found ourselves living, in 2020, whereby not only our social catch-ups but also many of our other hitherto face-to-face activities were transferred to a collection of little boxes on the screen. The activities you choose could be realistic (e.g Zoom work/committee meetings, school/college/uni/adult teaching, presentations, work/leisure training, exercise classes, oral/practical exams, medical consultations, celebrations, or the use of Zoom on TV, in the news, TV chat shows etc.) or they could be more far-fetched (e.g. a surgeon talking a patient through carrying out their own operation, dentistry, osteopathy, massage, hair and beauty treatment etc.) or any other ideas you might have, however sensible or absurd. In this round, writers may either submit a monologue (perhaps your character addresses the audience as if they are the participants in a meeting, class or whatever) or a duologue (either a one-to-one or two participants in an apparently bigger Zoom event).
While membership was not required for Zoomologues rounds 1-4, because they were a new experiment, they have been so successful that we feel it’s fair to revert to the usual WRiTEON requirement that you must be a paid-up member to submit scripts for our writing opportunities. The good news is that you can now join for only £12 and your membership will be valid until December 2021 (yes, 2021)! See our Membership page for details.
We look forward to reading your scripts and to seeing those selected performed. You may request to act your piece yourself (with a collaborator or other actor of your choice, if it’s a duologue) or leave it to us to do the casting.

The Story so Far
WRiTEON’s response to the lockdown was to create Zoomologues. Between May and October 2020, 36 monologues and 12 duologues, by 26 writers, were performed by 38 actors, over eight nights, to an invited audience on live Zoom video calls. There were the inevitable lockdown stories; exploring how friendships, couple and family relationships might be either broken or strengthened during these strange times, but there were also many stories set in other eras, ranging from Greek mythological sports commentators to a futuristic AI Priest, while our Zoomologues Gallery (Round 3) inspired wide-ranging interpretations of subjects of portrait paintings. Most of the writers and actors were local but others joined us from London, Edinburgh, Belgium and The U.S.A. Comments included:
‘I think I may prefer zoom to the experience of being in a theatre!’
‘A real treat! I enjoyed it so much. Thanks to all writers and actors – and let’s do it again soon.’
‘Another set of awesome evenings…I do hope you do more, they work really well and I’m loving some of the new voices we’re hearing…And of course the acting is top notch as well’
